Cancun began as a tourist attraction in 1968, but the archaeological sites here are quite minor as compared to those in the rest of the peninsula. There is one called Del Rey on the south end of the island, and one next to the Sheraton Hotel called Yamil Lu'um, which is also the highest spot in Cancun.
Accommodations range from inexpensive to deluxe. Tours to nearby sites such as Chichen Itza can be arranged from many hotels.
Cancun's international airport is located about 20 kilometers south of the city. Cancun is well-served by buses from all over. Bus stations are located across from the Hotel Plaza del Caribe at the corner of Avenidas Tulum and Uxmal. Fares are inexpensive, but should be purchased in advance due to overcrowding.
